Yarden Places Israel on International Wine Map
January 24, 2002
From its first Yarden vintage in 1983, Israel's Golan Heights Winery has been literally taking home the gold, year after year, in world wine competitions.
The winery enjoys the extraordinary distinction of winning the Grand Prix d'Honneur at Bordeaux's bi-annual Vinexpo in three consecutive years, and four times in total.
During the past 13 years, the winery's super-premium Yarden label has won two trophies and 12 gold medals at London's International Wine & Spirit Competition. Critical reception in the United States has been impressive as well. Frank Prial of The New York Times commented, "Once, recommendations of Israeli wine were mostly of a sentimental nature. With Yarden, that is no longer necessary."
Founded in 1983 in the village of Katzrin in northeastern Israel, the Golan Heights Winery ushered in a new era in Israel's 6,000-year-old wine culture. It led the way by bringing in expert consultants from California, trained in modern winemaking technology and adhering to international quality standards. The winery also focused exclusively on high quality, classic vinifera varieties, growing them in the highest regions of the Golan Heights (also known simply as the Golan), where the volcanic soils, cooling breezes, and sun-drenched days are ideal for the winery's state-of-the-art viticulture.
From the cradle of the world's wine industry, Yarden is in the forefront of Israel's growing global acclaim. Because of the Golan's long, dry growing season and cool mountain breezes, Yarden wines have a delicious balance of fruit, structure, and freshness that complement not only Israel's native Mediterranean dishes but also a wide range of international cuisines.
