Yarden Wines Celebrate the Sweet Side of Rosh Hashanah
July 22, 2005
Rosh Hashanah, the festive Jewish New Year and first holiday of the fall season, is a time for both contemplation and celebration.
While reflecting on the past year and making resolutions, Jews around the world also celebrate the sweet side of life as they have done for millennia—with loved ones close by, dipping apples and challah in honey, and toasting with kosher wines to express hope for joy and blessings in the coming year. The holiday, which begins this year at sundown on October 3rd, marks the start of the year 5766 in the Jewish calendar.
In addition to a full range of still and sparkling wines that pair with everything from brisket to burgers, Israel’s Golan Heights Winery—one of the world’s best kosher wine producers—has crafted four wines to complement the foods served for Rosh Hashanah, which are often sweet. In addition to the winery’s wide selection of crisp, dry wines, Golan Moscato, Yarden Muscat, Yarden HeightsWine, and Yarden Noble Semillon are sweet wines made in a sophisticated, contemporary style and are ideal for your holiday table.
Golan Moscato, while sweet, is also lightly sparkling, with a relatively low alcohol content that keeps the wine light and refreshing, making it a great apéritif to start off the festivities. It is richly aromatic, combining floral, tropical fruit, and fresh citrus characters with light spice notes. At the end of the meal, enjoy Golan Moscato with almost any dessert, such as juicy fruit salad, strawberry shortcake, or blackberry pie. Suggested retail price for a 750 ml bottle is $11.00.
Yarden Muscat combines flavors of citrus, apricot, and flowers with aromatic vanilla, and is equally well suited to Rosh Hashanah dishes made with fruits and honey as well as the traditional desserts. A gift box—specially designed for the holidays—holds two 750 ml bottles of Yarden Muscat and an attractive 2005/2006 calendar. Widely available, the gift box retails for $25.00. A single bottle retails for $15.00.
Yarden HeightsWine is a delicious dessert wine made from Gewurztraminer that offers a rich array of characters, layering apricot, peach, and melon fruit notes with hints of spice, honeysuckle and orange marmalade. The wine’s luxurious sweetness hints at its long, intense finish. Age-worthy, Yarden HeightsWine can be cellared for many years to come—if you can resist opening it! For a grand finale, enjoy with rich desserts such as crêpes Suzette, cheesecake, pecan pie, tarte tatin, crème brûlée, chocolate cake, or simple fresh fruit. A 375 ml bottle retails for $25.00.
Yarden Noble Semillon 2004 is made using a new process to manually inoculate grapes with Botrytis cinerea, the fungus responsible for such famed wines as Sauternes’ Château d’Yquem. This intense, concentrated wine displays a rich blend of characters: apricot, pear, flowers, orange marmalade, papaya, and peach with hints of nutmeg. It boasts a long, honeyed finish balanced by refreshing acidity—and will continue to develop complexity for many years to come. Enjoy it alone, with light desserts such as fruit tarts and sorbets, or in the classic pairing with foie gras and blue-veined cheeses. A 375 ml bottle retails for $30.00.
With its 6,000-year-old tradition of winemaking, Israel is both the cradle of the world’s wine industry and home to some of the finest, most modern kosher wines made today. While kosher, the wines of the Golan Heights Winery are not mevushal (flash pasteurized) in order not to compromise their quality. Enjoy these versatile wines not only at holidays but also throughout the year at weddings, anniversaries, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, and on the Sabbath.
