Zelma Long to Consult to Golan Heights Winery
October 11, 2002
The Golan Heights Winery announces that Zelma Long, one of California’s best known winemakers, is to begin immediately as a special consultant.
The announcement was made by Shalom Blayer, CEO and Managing Director of Israel’ s Golan Heights Winery. Explaining his choice of consultant, Blayer remarked, “We believe Zelma is uniquely qualified to help us effectively recognize and invest our time and talents in those technical activities needed to reach an even higher level of quality than we have already achieved with our wines here at the Golan Heights Winery.”
The winery’s California-born and UC Davis-trained Head Enologist Victor Schoenfeld explained how enthused he and his team of winemakers and viticulturalists were with their new relationship with Long. “There are few people on the planet with her breadth and depth of experience in top-quality winemaking, “Schoenfeld stated. “While we have a natural affinity for California, we wanted someone with both international experience and an expertise with wineries of different sizes. While the Golan Heights Winery is not a small winery, in many ways, we operate like one.”
At the helm since 1992, Schoenfeld has helped the Golan Heights Winery usher in a new era in Israel’s ancient wine culture. Yarden’s growing international prominence—including numerous awards and an invitation to join the coveted Wine Spectator New York Wine Experience in 2001—reflects Schoenfeld and Blayer’s vision of Israel as a producer of modern, world-class wines. Looking to the future, Schoenfeld notes, “Carefully managing our growth while still maintaining our ultimate objective of superior quality and staying true to our terroir is our top priority. Zelma can help us meet these challenges.”
When asked what her mission will be for this particular assignment in Israel, Long explained that she will focus exclusively on red varieties, following the grapes from the vine to the bottle. However, she was quick to add, that perhaps more important is what she will not do. In her capacity as a wine consultant, Long does not have a set approach to winemaking. She does not bring a “recipe” to the workplace, but instead seeks to help her clients evoke their sites and styles at the highest potential.
