Wine Enthusiast Honors Montes

Chile’s Montes winery has been named “Winery of the Year: New World” by Wine Enthusiast Magazine. Montes is one of eight winners of the magazine’s annual wine & spirits industry awards for 2002, and is featured in its "Annual Awards" issue.
“All of us at Montes are immensely proud and honored,” says Director Douglas Murray. “An award like “Winery of the Year: New World” covers a vast territory and to think that Wine Enthusiast feels that we are at the forefront, competing with wineries we have always profoundly admired, is beyond our wildest dreams.”
To winemaker Aurelio Montes, this award recognizes “the devotion, passion, love, and dedicated work of a team—one that knows the key to success”. And what is that key? “Ten percent inspiration and 90% transpiration”, he quips, referring to the grapevine’s process of evaporating water through its leaves to prevent overheating.
"There were two major themes that became clear in the selection of our winners this year," stated Adam Strum, Editor and Publisher of Wine Enthusiast Magazine. "First, our finalists have not just improved the quality of wine and spirits, but they have also improved the quality of our lives. And second, they are all involved with wine globally: exporting, consulting, partnering."
The eight award recipients were honored at a black-tie gala awards ceremony on January 13, 2003. It took place at The Powerhouse, in the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.
