Montes Winery Initiates A Sustainable Winegrowing Initiative
May 7, 2008
Montes Winery, a top producer in Chile - renowned as a “viticultural paradise” due to its temperate climate - has announced its formal adoption of a sustainable winegrowing initiative in order to further protect the environmental integrity of its estates and ultimate wine production.
Set in Apalta, a Mediterranean region in the Colchagua Valley, the Montes estate is bordered by the Hualo Oak Forest and the Tinguirrica River – two areas lush with indigenous plant life. This initiative incorporates a strategic approach in maintaining the natural ecosystem of its estates through sound viticultural management practices, water preservation methods, and recycling.
Viticultural Management: Exploring new terroirs has always been Montes forte, and now they are making strides in re-examining their own to produce the finest fruit possible. Managing the vineyards in the most eco-friendly manner involves implementing proven grape growing and pest management techniques, reducing the need for chemical or cultural intervention to correct problems with vine vigor, pests, or any other environmental condition that would impact vine health or wine quality. The use of organic compost as fertilizer provides another step in sustainable winegrowing, ensuring healthy living soil, and a slower release of nutrients to the vines.
Water Preservation: Water availability is not an issue in Chile, however with global warming in mind, Montes further controls the growth and stress on vines through strategic water management by irrigating vines with rainwater harvested in large reservoirs and recycled waste water from its production facilities. This guarantees grapes are produced in conditions that meet or surpass Montes quality expectations.
Recycled Paper: Montes encourages minimal paper usage in all facets of production, including printing its newsletter on 100% recycled paper. The use of recycled paper reduces the amount of paper landfilled and preserves the forest ecosystem, caring for clean water, wildlife habitat and the biodiversity they shelter. Visitors to Montes Winery in Chile can further experience Montes devotion to the environment by exploring their renowned botanical trail up the foothills of the Andes Mountains, and viewing the many exotic indigenous plants, before enjoying Montes fine wines.
Montes S.A. is a totally Chilean-owned, boutique winery, created in 1988 with the unique mission of producing exclusively premium wines, a brave step at a time when Chile was best known for mass-produced, inexpensive wines. Montes pioneered the Chilean ultra-premium wine category first with Montes Alpha “M”—a groundbreaking wine that set new quality standards for Chile. Next came Montes Folly—the first Syrah produced in Colchagua, and most recently the introduction of Montes Purple Angel—their first Carmenère-based wine The winery was named “Most Innovative Company” in 2004 by PROCHILE, Chile’s official Export Bureau support office.
