Alfredo Vidaurre Montes Wine Scholarship

The Institute of Masters of Wine is delighted to announce that the Montes Scholarship, announced for the first time in 2007, has been renamed the Alfredo Vidaurre Montes Wine Scholarship, in honour of Alfredo Vidaurre, co-founder, partner and former director of Montes, who died in February this year.
This generous annual scholarship, consisting of a US$ 10,000 travel bursary, will enable the winner to travel to Chile, to visit Montes and other premium wine producers in the region, and to further his or her knowledge about this diverse and viticulturally exciting country. The winning candidate may be from anywhere in the world and will be selected by an essay on the subject of Chile and its wines. This year’s topic will be:
Joanna M Locke MW, Chairman of the Institute of Masters of Wine, said “We are very grateful to Montes for continuing this generous scholarship. Alfredo Vidaurre and his partners had a vision to make premium wine that truly merited such a quality designation at a time when Chile was known principally for bulk wine production, and we are honoured to benefit from the continuation of this vision, and delighted to be able to offer the Institute’s students such an enriching opportunity.”
Douglas Murray, Founding Partner and Director of Montes SA, said “We are extremely selective in whom we support, and, as such, it is for us an honor to continue offering the scholarship in Alfredo Vidaurre’s name. We can think of no better way to serve the cause of superior Chilean wines than by increasing awareness of our country’s ever improving wine industry. Additionally, there is no better way to honor our dear friend Alfredo than through this exercise through the pinnacle of wine wisdom, for which the intials “MW” stand.”
